Autumn arrives in Ruka–Kuusamo with cool evenings and crisp, fresh air. Here, the season of autumn colours—known in Finnish as ruska—lasts for seven weeks, beginning in the final week of August and continuing until around mid-October.

During those weeks, the landscape goes through many transformations. At first, hints of colour begin to appear. Soon, the fell slopes are glowing in shades of yellow, orange and red. Finally, the first frosty mornings arrive, coating the ground in white and making the frozen grass crunch beneath your feet.

For many visitors, autumn in Ruka is a cherished tradition that brings them back year after year. It is a time when we meet familiar faces again—people returning to their favourite trails, viewpoints and local services. It is wonderful to see how a visit to Ruka in autumn has become an important part of the annual rhythm for so many.

There is plenty happening in Ruka Village too. Throughout the autumn season, Restaurant Zone hosts a fantastic line-up of top Finnish artists, with live music on as many as four nights a week. After a day spent exploring the outdoors, it is lovely to come together, listen to music and soak up the atmosphere of an autumn evening.

In early October, the harvest season culminates in Riistapeijaiset wild food weekend. Although the name traditionally refers to a game feast, the event celebrates much more than wild game: it is a true festival of the northern harvest, bringing together flavours from the forests, lakes and fields. Alongside game, the menu features fish, mushrooms, berries, vegetables and other local ingredients.

Autumn has always been a season of new beginnings. Schools and hobbies start again, and everyday life settles into a new rhythm after the summer. At Rukapalvelu, autumn is also a time of renewal. We are opening a new restaurant, completing 24 new apartments, and improving and expanding our wilderness camps in preparation for the coming Christmas season. There is plenty of work under way to ensure that everything is ready when our first winter guests arrive.

I draw energy from nature and the changing seasons. In the North, no moment lasts forever. However busy our construction sites may be, nature continues at its own steady pace. The autumn colours are in no hurry, the frost arrives when the time is right, and the first snow falls when its moment comes.

By late August, the nights in Ruka–Kuusamo are dark enough for the first northern lights of the autumn to appear—if luck is on our side. The return of darkness does not mean that the light disappears. Instead, it reveals a whole new kind of light.

Every day is a good day to come to Ruka. Our services are open every day of the year, and there is no single right season for unforgettable experiences.
