HONEST. GENEROUS. MADE WITH CARE.
Stone Farnorth Kitchen brings nearly four decades of Rukapalvelu’s culinary expertise from the wilderness to the heart of Ruka Village. Located in the Safari House, the restaurant serves breakfast, café treats, hearty lunches and dinner during the high season. It is the kind of food you can enjoy at any time—on your own or in good company, in the middle of an ordinary day, after an outdoor adventure or on a special occasion.
Stone is where Rukapalvelu’s story—built on stone, hard work and bringing people together—finds a new table in the heart of Ruka Village.
IT ALL BEGAN WITH STONE.
In the early 1990s, Jokke Kämäräinen and his brother Jorma were exploring Petäjävaara hill in search of a site for a wilderness lodge. At the top of the hill, they came across an impressive rocky outcrop. Jokke believed the rock continued further down the slope and decided to uncover it.
Day after day, an excavator worked beside Lake Petäjälampi until the rock face finally emerged. Jokke immediately knew he was looking at the back wall of a future building. Trees were felled, logs were shaped and notched into place, and in October 1991 Kammi—a wilderness restaurant built against the rock—opened its doors.
Kammi became a place where food, fire, stories and people gathered around the same table created a truly special atmosphere. That same spirit has remained at the heart of Rukapalvelu’s adventures, wilderness camps and shared campfires for nearly four decades.
Stone soon reappeared in the Rukapalvelu story. On 30 October 1993, Jokke and Rukapalvelu opened the Safari House in Ruka—possibly the only building of its kind anywhere in the world. At the centre of the opening celebrations was a huge boulder, moved aside with an excavator by Erkki Metsola, the main character in Metsolat, Finland’s most popular television series at the time. The stone had to make way for a new chapter to begin.
In 2000, Restaurant Zone opened in a prime location in Ruka Village. Its name was inspired by its setting: Zone stands where north and east meet, equally distant from the Arctic Circle and Finland’s eastern border. Over the years, it became much more than a restaurant. It became a local institution, a meeting place and a second home for many who return to the fell year after year.
Now, culinary expertise refined over decades is being brought from the wilderness camps to the heart of Ruka Village. Stone continues a story in which every new chapter is built on solid foundations—and there is always room for people to come together.
Kammi was built from stone. Stone made way for the Safari House. Now, a new table is being set on the same foundations.
