As the Ruka–Kuusamo travel region momentarily quietens with the rest of the world, we at Rukapalvelu are pouring our energy into developing new experiences. Our focus is firmly set on the coming summer and the next winter season.
To bring you closer to the landscapes you love, we’re launching a biweekly story series showcasing the people behind our company and the unique experiences waiting here in Kuusamo. So grab a cup of coffee, take a moment, and let your mind wander into the rolling fells and soul-stirring nature of the North.
Jokke Kämäräinen – A Calm Look Toward the Future
As one of Kuusamo’s longest-standing tourism entrepreneurs, Jokke Kämäräinen has seen more than three decades of changes—from economic swings to evolving business models.
“Since no one can predict the future, we’re preparing for the moment when life returns to normal,” Jokke says.
After the first shock of the pandemic, sleeves were rolled up across Kuusamo. Spring plans shifted overnight as the tourism sector closed its doors, and Jokke’s travels around the world turned into hands-on renovation work at home.
The renovation of the Safarihouse—originally scheduled for summer—was fast-tracked to April. Apartments are being refreshed, with new surfaces, doors and saunas ready even before summer begins.
Thirty Years of Entrepreneurship Fueled by Passion
In the early days, Jokke trusted his instincts and passion for entrepreneurship. It was almost by chance that his path didn’t lead to electronics or car restoration.
A tourism course in 1987 sealed the beginning of Rukapalvelu. With Ruka Ski Resort growing rapidly, starting a nature-based tourism company felt natural—especially for someone who loved the outdoors and wanted to share meaningful experiences with others.
The first customers were corporate groups staying in local cabins. Jokke led them by snowmobile into Kuusamo’s wilderness, escaping everyday life with coffee brewed over the fire at a remote shelter. His enthusiasm and warm personality quickly sparked a bond between visitors and the region’s pristine nature.
From Snowmobile Rentals to a Full-Scale Experience Provider
Over the years, Rukapalvelu’s offering has expanded from snowmobiling to include fishing, river rafting and entirely new ways of exploring Kuusamo’s waters and rapids. Wilderness camps were built to host larger groups in the heart of nature.
“The best thing about entrepreneurship has been the deep friendships formed along the way,” Jokke reflects.
Unforgettable moments have been shared with guests—from Kuusamo to Viena Karelia and across Northern Finland—ending the day gathered around the fire at remote wilderness camps.
Today, Rukapalvelu is a wide-ranging service provider combining in-house expertise with strong partnerships. Accommodation, restaurants and a rich selection of year-round nature adventures form the core of our offering.
Wellbeing Rooted in Authentic Encounters with Nature
Rukapalvelu aims to be a gateway to nature and memorable experiences in Kuusamo. Our mission is to deepen people’s connection with the outdoors and offer truly authentic adventures.
The appreciation of nature has grown remarkably. People want to treat the environment with increasing care and understand its value. That’s why we are committed to developing more eco-friendly activities: mountain biking, snowshoeing, hiking, forest-wellness moments, reindeer and husky programs, paddling, white-water floating, ice-fishing and forest bathing.
“Nature will help us all heal from the impacts of the pandemic—and we want to be part of that recovery.”
Jokke himself enjoys nature in many ways. He seeks both adventure and silence, preferring places far from crowds. Although snowmobiling still holds its charm, the throttle sees much less action these days.
Discover Kuusamo’s Most Beautiful Places with an Experienced Guide
When asked about his favourite locations, Jokke names several lesser-known gems—though paddling the Oulankajoki River by open canoe remains a timeless favourite.
“Imagine this,” he begins.
A peaceful path lined with old trees leads easily toward the top of a high fell. At the summit, a natural rest spot invites you to catch your breath. On a clear day, the views stretch endlessly over the vast Lake Kitka and toward Pyhitystunturi. To the east lies the Valtavaara ridge, with Rukatunturi and Pyhävaara rising to the south.
Ancient trees, weather-polished rocks and a deep sense of calm invite you to lie back on the open cliff and gaze at the sky. Close your eyes, and nature completes the moment—the wind, the silence, the textures of stone under your hands.
Beneath you lie cracks shaped by centuries—and by human hands decades ago. When you stand up, you notice a subtle land-art installation commissioned by the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation and created by artist Pessi Mantere. It tells a story of coexistence between people and nature, the marks we leave behind, and how time quietly erases them.
After an experience like this, returning to everyday life feels a little easier.
