Oulanka National Park is one of Finland’s most breathtaking natural areas, and the good news is that you don’t need to be an experienced trekker to enjoy it. Located just a short drive from Ruka and Kuusamo, this 290-square-kilometer wilderness park offers trails for all fitness levels, including plenty of well-marked routes that are perfect for first-timers. Whether you’re planning a quick day hike or a longer adventure, hiking in Oulanka National Park is one of the most rewarding things you can do in the Ruka–Kuusamo region.
This guide walks you through everything a beginner needs to know before hitting the trails, from choosing the right route and packing smart to getting there and picking the best time of year to visit.
Best beginner trails in Oulanka National Park
Oulanka has around ten marked trails to choose from, which makes it easy to find a route that matches your pace and experience level. The park’s most famous route is the Karhunkierros, or Bear’s Ring Trail, which is Finland’s most celebrated long-distance hiking path. While the full trail stretches roughly 80 kilometers and takes several days to complete, beginners don’t need to tackle the whole thing.
The Small Bear’s Ring
The best starting point for beginners is the Small Bear’s Ring, a shorter loop of approximately 12 kilometers that gives you a genuine taste of the Karhunkierros experience without the multi-day commitment. The trail passes suspension bridges, the roaring Kiutaköngäs rapids, and dense boreal forest. It’s well-signposted and manageable for most people with basic fitness.
Oulanka Canyon Trail
Another accessible option is the Oulanka Canyon Trail, a shorter walk that takes you along the riverbank and offers some of the park’s most dramatic scenery. This route is ideal if you want a relaxed outing that still delivers stunning views without demanding technical skill or long walking hours.
What to pack for a day hike in Oulanka
Packing right makes a real difference when hiking in Finnish wilderness terrain. The weather in the Ruka–Kuusamo area can change quickly, so layering is your best strategy regardless of the season.
- Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. Trails can be muddy and uneven.
- Clothing: A moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell.
- Navigation: Download an offline map or pick up a trail map from the Oulanka visitor centre before you set off.
- Food and water: Carry more water than you think you need, plus high-energy snacks. There are designated campfire sites in the park where you can stop and eat.
- First aid and sun protection: A basic kit and sunscreen, especially in summer when the sun stays low but strong for long hours.
- Insect repellent: Mosquitoes are active from late spring through summer, so this one is non-negotiable.
A light daypack of around 20 to 25 liters is usually enough for a day hike. Avoid overpacking, as the trails involve some elevation changes and river crossings that require steady footing.
Getting to Oulanka from Ruka and Kuusamo
Oulanka National Park is conveniently close to both Ruka and Kuusamo, making it easy to reach even without your own vehicle. The main visitor centre at Hautajärvi is roughly 35 kilometers from Ruka, and the Oulanka visitor centre near Kiutaköngäs is around 50 kilometers from Kuusamo town center.
If you’re driving, the roads are well-maintained and clearly signed. Parking is available at the main trailheads. During peak summer season, trailhead car parks can fill up early on weekends, so an early start is a good idea. Taxis and local transfer services operate in the area, and if you’re staying in Ruka, many accommodation providers can point you toward transport options. Guided day trips are another practical way to reach the park without worrying about logistics.
Seasonal highlights and the best time to hike
Oulanka offers something different in every season, and the right time to visit depends on what kind of experience you’re after. That said, late spring through early autumn is the most popular window for hiking near Ruka.
Summer (June to August)
Summer is the most accessible season for beginner hikers. Trails are dry, daylight is abundant, and the rivers are at their most vivid. In Kuusamo and Ruka, the Midnight Sun lasts for roughly three weeks from early June until the start of July, when the sun does not set at all. Hiking in continuous daylight is a genuinely special experience and gives you plenty of flexibility with timing.
Autumn (September to October)
Autumn, known locally as ruska, transforms Oulanka into a landscape of deep reds, burnt oranges, and golden yellows. Many visitors consider this the most visually stunning time to hike in the park. Temperatures drop, insects disappear, and the trails are quieter. Pack an extra warm layer and waterproofs, as autumn weather can be unpredictable.
Spring (May to early June)
Spring brings snowmelt and rushing rivers, which makes for dramatic scenery around the rapids. Trails can be wet and soft underfoot, so waterproof footwear is especially important. Birdlife is active, and the forest feels alive after the long winter.
